Doxastic Normality Logic: A Qualitative Probabilistic Modal Framework for Defaults and Belief
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose a new semantics for modeling belief, mixing conncepts from qualitative probabilistic and classical possible world accounts. Our belief structures are coherent sets of qualitative plausibility measures and belief corresponds to truth in the most plausible worlds of each epistemic alternative. We provide an axiomatic characterization of these doxastic structures in a bimodal language, based on a belief modality and a default conditional, and present a corresponding new epistemic entrenchment logic.

Probabilistic Unawareness
The modeling of awareness and unawareness is a significant topic in the doxastic logic literature, where it is usually tackled in terms of full belief operators. The present paper aims at a treatment in terms of partial belief operators. It draws upon the modal probabilistic logic that was introduced by Aumann (1999) at the semantic level, and then axiomatized by Heifetz and Mongin (2001). The ...

Bayesians model one’s doxastic state by subjective probabilities. But in traditional epistemology, in logic-based artificial intelligence, and in everyday life, one’s doxastic state is usually expressed in a qualitative, binary way: either one accepts (believes) a proposition or one does not. What is the relationship between qualitative and probabilistic belief? I show that, besides the familia...
متن کاملA quantitative doxastic logic for probabilistic processes and applications to information-hiding
We introduce a novel modal logic, namely the doxastic μ-calculus with error control (DμCEC), and propose a formalization of probabilistic anonymity and oblivious transfer in the logic, and the validation of these formalizations on implementations formalized in probabilistic CCS. The distinguishing feature of our logic is to provide a combination of dynamic operators for belief (whence the attri...
متن کاملThe Preface, the Lottery, and the Logic of Belief
John Locke proposed a straightforward relationship between qualitative and quantitative doxastic notions: belief corresponds to a sufficiently high degree of confidence. Richard Foley has further developed this Lockean thesis and applied it to an analysis of the preface and lottery paradoxes. Following Foley’s lead, we exploit various versions of these paradoxes to chart a precise relationship ...
متن کاملAn Approach to Minimal Belief via Objective Belief
As a doxastic counterpart to epistemic logic based on S5 we study the modal logic KSD that can be viewed as an approach to modelling a kind of objective and fair belief. We apply KSD to the problem of minimal belief and develop an alternative approach to nonmonotonic modal logic using a weaker concept of expansion. This corresponds to a certain minimal kind ofKSDmodel and yields a new type of n...
